Texas License to Carry
This class provides the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) required classroom training and firearm qualification students need in order to obtain a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC). Upon completion of this course students will receive a Form LTC-100 Certification of Training signed by a Certified DPS LTC Instructor.
Texas License to Carry Re-Certification
This is only for current Texas LTC Instructors who are in the process of renewing their certification and must submit the Texas required Form LTC-100 that certifies that they have demonstrated shooting proficiency with both the Revolver and Semi-Automatic Handgun.
Why do I need a
License to Carry?
Texas passed a law allowing the carrying of concealed weapons without a License to Carry (LTC). Why do I need one then?
Federal law mandates that even in Texas, you cannot carry a concealed firearm within 1000 feet of a school unless you have an LTC. An LTC allows you to pick up and drop off children with an accessible firearm in your vehicle, constitutional carry does not. This also means that without an LTC, you may be ineligible from carrying concealed without a permit on the street you live or while driving home from work if your path takes you near a school.
School district employees who have been issued an LTC have protections which allow them to keep a firearm and ammunition concealed in their locked motor vehicle in a school parking lot. This protection is not available to constitutional carry.
With an LTC you can purchase a firearm in Texas without going through the delay of further background check processes.
With an LTC you can carry a concealed firearm in over 35 states through reciprocity rules. Carrying without one in other states could end you up in trouble with the law even if that state also has constitutional carry.
An individual must be at least 21 years old to take advantage of constitutional carry. However, military members between the ages of 18-20 are eligible for Texas LTC which would allow them to lawfully carry a handgun in public.
Private property owners may choose to prohibit constitutional carry on their property by posting effective notice under Penal Code 30.05 and thereby prevent unlicensed individuals from carrying on their property. This exclusion would not apply to those who hold a valid Texas LTC.
Constitutional carry is statutorily prohibited at hospitals, nursing facilities, and amusement parks. However, an LTC holder is only prohibited in these places if effective notice has been provided under Penal Code 30.06 and 30.07.
An LTC holder will be allowed to carry at an open meeting of a governmental entity. Constitutional carry at an open meeting of a governmental entity would continue to be prohibited.
An LTC holder retains their ability to avoid arrest in the event they inadvertently have a firearm through a secured area of an airport as long as they promptly depart the secured area when notified they are in possession of a handgun. Constitutional carry is given no such courtesy and may be charged with a felony.
The statutory prohibition against carrying a handgun into a bar does not apply to an LTC holder unless the bar has posted a 51% sign in accordance with the law.
Lastly, and possibly most important, an LTC shows that you take the responsibility of carrying a firearm seriously. So serious, that you are willing to commit your time to go through the necessary training to carry out your duties appropriately. Proper training helps you not only understand the laws of Texas when it comes to carrying and the use of firearms, but it will also make you more comfortable and proficient in its safe use if encountered with a deadly situation. Interactions with law enforcement while carrying may also be easier.
